“Black Swan” will be released in theaters nationwide (US) on December 1, 2010!

Aronofsky’s “Black Swan” is described as a “psychological thriller” and stars Natalie Portman as a New York City ballerina competing with pal Mila Kunis for the lead role in “Swan Lake.” The film opens December 1, and will kick off the Venice Film Festival in September as well.

Programming for the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival was announced today. Every September the stars come out to promote their work and this year looks as promising as ever. While a lot of the films are still building buzz, there are a handful that have already got their promotional machine’s wheels in motion.

Although they haven’t mentioned which stars will be attending the gala screenings, based on the titles released we can (fingers crossed) expect Clive Owen, Keira Knightley, James McAvoy, Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone, Sam Rockwell, Robert De Niro, Evan Rachel Wood, Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams. That’s just to name a few.

Here are some flicks to watch out for at this year’s TIFF.

Black Swan: Darren Aronofsky, USA North American Premiere A psychological thriller set in the world of New York City ballet, Black Swan stars Natalie Portman as Nina, a featured dancer who finds herself locked in a web of competitive intrigue with a new rival at the company. Black Swan takes a thrilling and at times terrifying journey through the psyche of a young ballerina whose starring role as the duplicitous swan queen turns out to be a part for which she becomes frighteningly perfect. Black Swan also stars Vincent Cassel, Mila Kunis, Barbara Hershey and Winona Ryder.

“Black Swan” will be opening the 2010 Venice Film Festival on September 1st!

“The cast and crew of Black Swan are both excited and humbled by the selection committee’s invitation,” Darren Aronofsky said in a press announcement. “It is an honor to walk the great red carpet on the Lido, and we are excited to premiere our film to the wonderful audiences in Venice.”

The dark tale with psychological twists stars Natalie Portman as Nina, a technically brilliant ballerina whose life takes some strange turns after being picked as the lead in a New York City production of Swan Lake. Pressures mount as her overbearing mother (Barbara Hershey) pushes her to succeed and her manipulative dance master (Vincent Cassel) commands her to be more seductive and loose in her performance.

Complicating matters is the arrival of Lily (Mila Kunis), a sultry dancer who exhibits all the innate ease and sexuality that Nina lacks. Nina begins to fixate on the newcomer as the two forge an unusual relationship.

“The worldwide attention given to the Venice film festival provides an exciting launch for Black Swan,” says Nancy Utley, president of Fox Searchlight. “We are very proud of our collaboration with Darren.”

We’re still waiting on the official release date for Darren Aronofsky’s supernatural thriller Black Swan starring Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis – so what’s the hold up?

We have not reported much on the Darren Aronofsky supernatural thriller Black Swan because, well, there hasn’t been much to report. The film has been in post-production since early February and we are still waiting on a release date.

I read the script a few months ago. After all, the buzz surrounding the film was intriguing. The two stars, Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis, were to engage in a heated embrace – destined to get audiences in a frenzy. On the merit of that rumor, and my own personal admiration for Darren Aronofsky’s writing, I flew through the screenplay in less than an hour and wanted to read it again.

Black Swan deals with some serious issues of rivalry and jealousy. At times, it reminds you of Christopher Nolan’s The Prestige. In addition to the rivalry, it also finds a way to connect the audience with ballerinas. Many felt magic was a laughable profession until The Prestige showed a more serious side. Black Swan finds a way to do the same for ballet.

Take this movie seriously. The story is riveting, exciting and definitely controversial. Yet, amidst all that hype, it is grounded in a sort of dramatic world that is believable and engaging. So, how can a script that produces so many positive adjectives still be in the shadows of Hollywood?

I understand that Black Swan is not Thor or Batman 3. There are no hordes of fans itching to learn the next bit of information about the film – but that may be Fox Searchlight’s fault. Do they not realize what a gem they’ve got on their hands? Why has the production company not released any information on the film besides the generic listings on IMDb?

The obvious assumptions come to mind – editing problems, budget fiasco, re-shoots, etc. After all, Aronfosky is no stranger to production holdups. Brad Pitt was supposed to star in The Fountain before creative differences and a contract holdout halted production. Hugh Jackman joined the project, saved the day and now the film is as cherished as it is hated.

But the point is, we have yet to hear a single word uttered about Black Swan. While it may have the skin of an independent drama, it has the actors and writing of a movie people will talk about well into awards season. There is still a good six months left in 2010. It shouldn’t take more than two of those to promote this film. But I find it hard to believe the team behind Black Swan can announce a date and garner the interest necessary to release an acclaimed film.

Screen Gems is clear to go forward with the title Friends with Benefits for its new comedy starring Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis, the studio confirms. Screen Gems was waiting for Paramount Pictures to drop their protest on the title — Paramount is currently in production with director Ivan Reitman on a film with the same title. (The studio did drop their complaint Thursday.) Now Friends With Benefits will begin production in July in New York and Los Angeles.

But to complicate matters, NBC is planning a Friends with Benefits sitcom as a mid-season replacement. It comes from 500 Days of Summer screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael Weber and centers on five friends looking for love but settling for “friends with benefits” instead. The duo is executive producing along with David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers). Considering the show doesn’t yet have a concrete air date, there is no real confusion yet in the marketplace. But a heated battle may come sooner than later. An NBC spokesperson tells EW.com that the series title is locked and they are expecting the feature to change its name. Screen Gems contends that due to its production schedule, they don’t expect an issue to arise.

In Hollywood, title protests usually occur on most films, with studios competing for similar phrases and words to use in the titles of their own projects. Titles are approved once the other studios drop their protests. That usually happens once it’s determined who first registered the title with the MPAA. The project’s registration was filed back in 2003, the first to do so. Proof of intent to make the film is also required. (That includes a start date, a full cast, and a director hired on to the project.)

The Reitman film, which was originally titled F*** Buddies and was only changed to Friends with Benefits due to the obvious limitations the original title held, will now be given a third name for the marketplace. It’s currently in production with Ashton Kutcher, Natalie Portman and Kevin Kline. Based on a Black List script from Liz Meriwether, the R-rated comedy deals with a friendship turned sexual, but in this case, Portman’s character is calling the shots, while Kutcher is hopelessly in love with her.

In contrast, Friends with Benefits, also about a couple whose friendship turns sexual, centers on two friends who meet through business. Both are extremely tired of the dating world and agree to start sleeping together, swearing off any emotional attachment. Will Gluck (the upcoming Easy A) will direct.

Mila Kunis admits that she is a big fan of video games, and spends hours playing them with her current boyfriend, Macaulay Culkin. There is one particular game that Mila is a huge fan of, and that is the app currently available on social networking site Facebook, named FarmVille. Anyone who has ever joined facebook is no doubt aware of the game, in which you take on the role of a farmer, taking care of a farm. Simple I know, but millions are addicted. Mila says:

“All you do is grow wheat. And then you grow blueberries. It’s so monotonous and yet great at the same time. I’m obsessed.”

And if your not growing wheat, your sending out daily annoying reminders to all your friends to ask them to join you! Probably quite a strange hobby for Mila to pick up, but whatever keeps her happy between work…
